Mengwei Chen is a Chinese artist based in London. Her practice draws deeply from the fading sorcery and folkloric arts of East Asia, weaving these influences with narratives found in literature and comics. Her work revolves around ghosts, ritual, and illusion. By combining painting and installation with the traditional art of papercutting, and incorporating elements of popular culture—particularly anime and comics—she reimagines these vanishing cultural forms and beliefs through a contemporary lens. Chen's art examines how the intangible aspects of our past—death, spectral presence, and ceremonial traditions—can be reinterpreted in a rapidly evolving world.
